A pelvic laparoscopy, or gynecology laparoscopy, is a minimally invasive procedure used by gynecologists to diagnose and treat conditions of the female reproductive system. Women experiencing intense pelvic pain will often visit their OB/GYN and undergo testing with an ultrasound.

If the imaging results do not provide a definitive diagnosis, a gynecologist may recommend a pelvic laparoscopy to get a better understanding of what’s causing their pain.

Why our Gynecologists Recommend Pelvic Laparoscopy

There are many reasons I would recommend pelvic laparoscopy to my patients. This procedure is recommended when there is a need to visually examine the pelvic organs. It can be used in a number of situations in order to diagnose and treat conditions such as pelvic pain, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy.

During the procedure, gynecologists can take samples of tissue for biopsy, identify internal bleeding, and check for signs of gynecologic trauma. As a minimally invasive procedure, pelvic laparoscopies leave patients with less discomfort post-surgery, shorter recovery times, and minimal scarring.

Pelvic laparoscopy is done under anesthesia, and the gynecologist uses a laparoscope – a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and camera at the end that allows them to see into the pelvic area.

Reasons for diagnostic pelvic laparoscopies include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Unexplained pelvic pain
  • Infertility
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Reproductive cancers
  • Ovarian cysts

Some conditions treated with pelvic laparoscopy are:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Tubal ligation and reversal
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Removal of ovaries, ovarian cysts, fibroids, or adhesions
  • Incontinence
  • Prolapsed uterus
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Pelvic pain
  • Cancer
  • Infertility

Pelvic laparoscopies are also outpatient procedures, meaning patients often return home the same day. This allows them to rest and recover from the comfort of home instead of the hospital.
