Varicose and Spider Veins: What’s the difference?

Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, varicose and spider veins are actually different. Varicose veins are bulging or twisted veins that are dark purple or blue in color most commonly found in the legs. Patients may experience an achy or heavy feeling in the leg or throbbing, cramping, swelling, itchiness or pain after long periods of sitting or standing. Spider veins are smaller and closer to the skin’s surface and also occur in the legs. Varicose and spider veins are more likely to affect women, especially those who have a family history or who are pregnant.

Minimally-Invasive Treatment Options

Endovenous ablation

A thin catheter is inserted into the vein and is heated to seal the vein shut. This prevents blood from refluxing toward the lower leg.

Sclerotherapy

Injections into the veins to minimize their appearance.

Microphlebectomies

Veins that are too large for injections are removed through small incisions.
